practical principles behind the contact experienceshort, simple consultation formpuzzles for a stressed visitor to solve

Meet the Client

Dolly Z. Hassan Law Offices is a New York law practice. Prospective clients arriving at the website are often dealing with something stressful and private. They need to understand what the firm handles, who they would be speaking with, and how to start a conversation without feeling overwhelmed.

For a law firm, the first conversation is the most delicate one. Nobody browses legal services for fun. People arrive because something has happened, and they are deciding in a few minutes whether this is a place they can trust with it. A website for a practice like this has one job above all others: make the first step feel safe.

The Challenge

Picture 11:40 on a weeknight in New York. (An illustrative scenario, but a familiar one.) Maria has just read a letter that has turned her week upside down. She is on her phone, on the sofa, worried, and she is not even sure what kind of lawyer she needs. She opens a few law firm websites and starts asking silent questions.

What the visitor is thinkingWhat the website has to do
Does this firm even handle my kind of problem?Explain the practice areas in plain language
Who would I actually be speaking with?Present the attorney's background in a way that builds trust quickly
How do I start without telling my whole story?Offer a short first form that asks for very little
What happens after I press send?Confirm clearly what comes next
Is my information safe?Handle every submission with visible care

Legal websites face a unique pressure. The person contacting a firm for the first time is rarely calm or casual. They want a clear path to a real person, and they should not have to share their full story in a web form just to begin.

Most contact forms either ask for too much too soon or give no guidance about what happens next. Both create unnecessary friction and risk. A big empty box that invites a visitor to pour out private details is stressful for them, and it also means the firm ends up holding sensitive information before a conversation has even started.

The Approach

Devzey built the website around clarity and care. Practice areas are explained in plain language. The attorney's background is presented to build trust quickly. The consultation path received the most attention, because every field on a form is a decision about what personal information is collected, where it goes, and who can read it.

The work followed six practical principles.

1. Ask Only What Is Needed

A name, a way to reach them, the general area of law, and perhaps the best time to call. Detailed facts belong in a proper consultation, not in the first form.

FieldOn the form?Why
NameYesSo the firm knows who is reaching out
A way to reach themYesSo someone can get back to them
General area of lawYesSo the inquiry can be understood and directed properly
Best time to callYes (optional)So the first call lands at a good moment
Detailed facts of the matterNoLeft for a proper consultation

Leaving the detailed story out is kinder to the visitor. It also means the firm collects and stores less private information in the first place.

2. Tell People What Happens Next

A short confirmation explains who will get in touch and roughly when. This reduces anxiety and repeat submissions. Anyone who has pressed send on a form and heard nothing knows the urge to press it again. A clear confirmation answers the question before it is asked.

3. Guide What to Share

The form includes space for the firm to note what visitors should hold back until they have spoken with an attorney. Devzey provides the space. The wording remains the firm's decision.

4. Route Submissions Carefully

Inquiries go to named people rather than a shared inbox. The admin area that stores them sits behind multi-factor authentication.

Without careful routingWith careful routing
An inquiry lands in a shared inbox that many people can openAn inquiry goes to named people
Stored submissions are only as safe as one passwordThe admin area that stores them requires multi-factor authentication

5. Keep Bots Out Without Punishing Humans

Invisible spam checks and rate limits do the filtering in the background. There are no puzzles to solve, because someone who is already stressed should not have to prove they are human by clicking on traffic lights.

6. Secure the Connection

HTTPS on every page, with a clear decision about how long submissions remain in the website database. Collecting less is the first protection. Deciding how long to keep what is collected is the second.

The Six Principles at a Glance

Ask only what is neededThe visitor's privacy
Tell people what happens nextThe visitor's peace of mind
Guide what to shareBoth the visitor and the firm
Route submissions carefullyThe firm's incoming inquiries
Keep bots out without punishing humansThe visitor's patience and the firm's inbox

The Journey of a First Contact

StepWhat the visitor experiencesWhat happens behind the scenes
1. ArrivesClear practice areas and an attorney profile that builds trustEvery page is served over HTTPS
2. Opens the formA short form, with space for the firm's own guidance on what to shareOnly the essentials are collected
3. Sends itA confirmation that explains who will be in touch and roughly whenInvisible spam checks and rate limits run in the background
4. WaitsKnows what to expect, so there is no need to submit twiceThe inquiry goes to named people, not a shared inbox
5. Is contactedHas shared only the essentials, and the rest is saved for the consultationStored submissions sit in an admin area protected by multi-factor authentication, and for a period the firm has chosen deliberately

The Outcome

Dolly Z. Hassan Law Offices now has a professional website that presents the firm clearly and makes first contact simple for visitors who are often under pressure.

The consultation path is designed to feel easy for the person reaching out and careful behind the scenes. Those two goals support each other: a shorter, clearer form is easier to complete and less risky to hold.
